The Rumbak to Shang Trek is a captivating trekking experience through Ladakh’s Hemis National Park, offering remote natural beauty and unique wildlife sightings, including the elusive snow leopard. Starting from Rumbak village, located at an elevation of around 4,000 meters, adventurers traverse a trail that climbs steeply towards two significant mountain passes — Stok La (4,855m) and Matho La (4,860m) — granting panoramic views of the Trans-Himalayan ranges and Zanskar mountains. Along the way, trekker’s paths weave through narrow valleys, rugged terrains, and alpine meadows dotted with shepherd huts.
The trek covers approximately 65 kilometers over 5 to 6 days, slowly descending from pass to pass, crossing serene rivers like the Stok River, and passing through traditional villages such as Gangpoche and Shang Sumdo. The trail features exciting segments of steep inclines, rolling ups and downs over minor passes, and tranquil campgrounds with stunning mountain vistas.
This route offers not just breathtaking landscapes but also cultural experiences, including visits to ancient monasteries and interactions with the local Ladakhi people. Spring to early autumn, primarily July to September, is the best season for the trek to enjoy favorable weather and chances of wildlife spotting.
The journey concludes with a gentle downhill walk from Shang La to Shang village, from where a vehicle transfers trekkers back to Leh, completing an Himalayan adventure.
